The Irish Data Centre Supplier Alliance (IDCSA) has welcomed the publication of the government’s new economic study on the data centre sector, which confirms the importance of the sector as a driver of growth for companies in the supply chain ecosystem.
The independent report, titled “The Value of Data Centres to Ireland”, underlines the multibillion-euro contribution of the data centre sector to the Irish economy each year, including supporting 19,500 jobs and generating €2.2 billion in economic activity annually. Published by the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism & Employment, Peter Burke, this in-depth report provides unequivocal evidence that the data centre sector plays a critical role as a driver of economic activity in Ireland.
In particular, the report highlights the central role the sector plays in supporting the international growth and expansion of Irish companies operating in the supply chain ecosystem. The study shows that construction activity in Ireland associated with data centres has fostered deep expertise within Ireland’s High-Tech Construction (HTC) industry, enabling Irish-owned firms to export their skills globally. For 2024, exports by Irish HTC firms to international data centre projects stood at €2.1 billion, with about 40% of these exports coming from indigenous, Irish-owned companies.
Tom Parlon, chair of IDCSA, welcomed the report, commenting:
“The ‘Value of Data Centres to Ireland’ report provides clear evidence outlining the sheer scale of economic activity, job creation and supply chain exports supported by the data centre sector in Ireland. We routinely hear claims that the data centre sector creates no jobs and provides little benefit to the Irish economy, yet this report shows these claims couldn’t be further from the truth.
“As outlined in the report, the construction and operation of data centres in Ireland accounted for €2.2 billion in economic activity in 2024, while also supporting 19,500 jobs and €280 million in employment-related-tax. What’s most impressive is how the sector supports the growth in the supply chain ecosystem. Exports by high-tech construction companies in Ireland stood at €2.1 billion in 2024, which is not surprising given that Irish firms are actively working on data centres projects all over Europe, North America and the Middle East.
“More than 200 Irish companies are attending the Datacloud Global Congress in Cannes this week, underlining once again how the data centre sector makes a critical contribution to the growth and international expansion opportunities for companies that operate in the supply chain ecosystem. Members of the IDCSA, who support tens of thousands of jobs between them, are testament to the economic value of the data centre sector in Ireland.”
